Structural rationalist. The person who memorises what Einar looks like when he is still himself. His decision to ride east at the end of Book I is not heroic — it is practical. A power this size alone becomes something else. Vale's presence is the difference.

Thirty years of hard decisions left him steady in the particular way of a man who learned the cost of not being steady. He handed Einar water when Einar woke in Lena's convoy. Neither spoke. That was the whole of it.

Survival pragmatist. Started as Einar's primary skeptic — the person most likely to see the threat clearly and act on it without sentiment. His arc is not a conversion. It's a slow, reluctant accumulation of evidence that he couldn't argue with.

He trained Einar in combat. He stayed with the settlement when Einar left. He keeps them safe. The debt sits low in the chest, denser than belonging. He would never mention it.

The first person to offer friendship without conditions. Watchful, precise, refuses to be argued out of what she's decided. She sat down in front of him without being invited and stayed there, and that was the whole of it.

Structural parallel to Kael's mother — the child who befriended the iteration before fear arrived. Two hundred years apart, the same instinct. Her "come back anyway" is the emotional anchor of Book I's ending.

His mother was the child who befriended the First Fabricator fifty years ago. She told him everything. He carries that testimony alongside the corridor-assembled knowledge of decades — and he knows which one is more reliable.

He gave Einar the mineral fragment and the story that came with it. He connected the chain. Someone asked him to tell the Fabricator story at a corridor fire after Einar left. He started. Stopped. Said he needed more time with it.

Their division of labour — Einar locates, Tomas repairs — is the book's central working metaphor. No questions asked. No conditions. Just the work, and the shared satisfaction of something fixed.

He attempted to replicate one of Einar's mineral formations after Einar left. Failed. Sat with it. Told no one.
